In the future, after the Microsoft Corporation schemes and bribes its way to become the puppet master to the United States Government starting with the Obama administration, Linux and all variants get listed as terrorist organisations and development is forced underground.

Development bases and fortresses are formed in inhospitable areas of the planet such as kilometres under the sea in geodesic dome cities, small at first then growing ever larger, not without some accidents during initial construction. Other rebel bases are formed in the Antarctic using renewable energy and remote radio transmitter stations. Bandwidth at the most remote locations is terrible, these are the bad times.

Microsoft eventually permeates every level of the Old Unites States government via bribes and manipulation of an ignorant public, restructuring government based on economic self-interest and to fortify and defend the core corporation. There is no public uprising or outcry from the members of the mega cities as they are afraid that they will lose the licenses on their windows installations that are now the core of everyday life for an urban citizen. The mega farms are all remotely controlled by heavy machinery running Windows Tractor Edition and other variants. When a citizen has the new “Universal Microsoft License” revoked, that citizen is prevented by the harsh rule of law from benefiting from anything directly or indirectly generated or assisted by Microsoft software or related technology as doing so would violate new ironclad copyright law.

The new copyright law is known as “The Sword and Shield against Piracy,” and a new government ministry is formed, the Special License Branch, the new secret police to secretly enforce the goals of The Microsoft Government.

In hills and caves in Afghanistan a great network of freedom fighters are able to use elevated transmitting locations and network mesh technology to form one of the largest resistance bases outside of the major megacities. From the Afghan mesh named Camp Stallman, users are able to use ridiculously easy group forming technology along with with free (as in freedom) opensource tools to organise skirmishes to install Linux in rogue locations. These are seen as the newest form of terrorism and the Microsoft Ministry of Propaganda launches a vast media campaign to enlist civilians in the fight against terrorism. Every citizen is fingerprinted, scanned in every method of biometrics possible and stored in “The Hive” a great oracle database that consumes one third of the world’s servers and storage. Oracle being assimilated into the Microsoft software family and having the core backend re-written to be replaced by Microsoft SQL code while still keeping full Oracle compatibility.

The Microsoft Government finally extends worldwide in a subtle but calculated attack using copyright law. Once all nations have signed the innocuous looking Copyright Trade Agreement, each nation then becomes vulnerable to litigation in the Old United States. In turn each nation signs new agreements to avoid the imprisonment and torture of its citizens by the Old United States. Each nation becomes a new state of the USA by international legal decree and by their own signing. The New United States of America is formed. A division of The Special License Branch is established in every nation, which wasn’t a hard task as all CIA operatives and structures of the Old United States were simply re-purposed for the goals of copyright and license enforcement. This became the best way to subvert control of nations or enforce national policy of The New United States worldwide as it is human nature to share and this can now be used against every citizen of the world.

In retaliation to the rampant Linux installation attacks via remote security holes in all versions of windows, the Ministry of Microsoft Defense targets anyone found using Linux and begins the crusade of shooting offenders on-site using automaton “license” and/or “patent” droidbots but thankfully the droidbots run Windows and so are on the most part ineffectual at actually killing anything besides themselves and other droidbots due to many visual recognition bugs in the software. A great number of droidbots are overtaken by remote Linux installs via security holes and a development of a droidbot worm undergoes initial testing at Camp Stallman. This starts the OS patching arms race. To avoid the rebels “flipping the switch” on entire armies of Microsoft automatons, they must upgrade furiously to avoid remote security holes. Humorously, for every patch Microsoft ships, 5 new security holes are created. Legions of droidbots fall into the control of the different groups or “distributions” of rebel factions.

Linux flavours worldwide organise and unite in the defence of freedom and basic human rights, the Rebel Alliance Distribution is established as the defacto distribution and spreads quickly, seeding from wherever strong unix and linux user bases existed. Soon street OS wars break out in the mega cities. The windows proponents are merely misguided consumers or genetically altered meat bags who don’t understand what they are or what they are even fighting for. Their actual genetic code is altered via Microsoft Food Units to have them “favour from flavour”, causing them to favour windows at any cost, even their lives.

Former Linux and Free Software luminaries covertly travel to Camp Stallman. They begin to organise The Final Insurrection. In the battle for human and civil rights and peace on earth, the Rebel Alliance Distribution don’t have the numbers compared to The Microsoft Government but they do have a distinct advantage. The Rebel Alliance Distribution use software that is stable and runs on even the oldest hardware. A 20 year old tractor can be turned into a weapon of mass distribution, even the oldest automaton droidbots become of use to the rebels, whereas Microsoft must generate new ones that are capable of running the latest patches of windows, each new patch requiring more ram and CPU to enable basic functions.
