Brisbane Floods 1974
Australia’s worst flood occurred in January 1974 in the city of Brisbane. The Brisbane river snakes through the city and broke it’s banks leading to extensive flooding in many parts of the city.
- Chelmer, 29.1.1974. The Indooroopilly railway and traffic bridges (at top of picture) connecting Chelmer and Indooroopilly, were only a few feet above the swollen Brisbane River. Map
- Brisbane Flood 1974, Festival Hall in Charlotte Street
- Former Parkroyal Motor Inn, Corner of Alice and Albert Streets near the Brisbane Botanic Gardens. Story bridge in the background.
- View over Victoria Bridge connecting South Brisbane with the CBD. Notice how high the water level is against the bridge pylons.
- Centenial Motorway, Kenmore.
- Trams are not getting through this flooded road.
- Victoria Bridge seen from the CBD side side looking over to South Brisbane.
- Brisbane Floods 1974, View of Story Bridge from Charlotte Street
- Aerial view of Brisbane City on Monday, January 28, 1974.

Hey bob jane,
How do I contact you, your hotmail mailbox is full?
I’m keen to get some recent flood photos that can be used on a blog. Let me know, thanks.
Does anyone have any photo’s of Bulimba in 1974 flood??? I have a house there and am worried that it will be underwater in a couple of hours!!????
Your photo shows the flood stopping trams, this can’t be from the 1974 floods. Brisbane’s last trams ran in 1969. Also the cars look much older in this picture.
Hi Drew,
Nice find, I’ll re-label that photo as it appears to be one of the 1800s flood previous to the 1974 one.
And a few years later in 2011 Brisbane has flooded again but with more buildings on the Brisbane skyline
Hi everyone…I am looking for as much info as I can on the floods of 1974 & 1990 in Logan Village…I would really appreciate any info at all….Thanks
