Video Conversion Guide for the iRiver X20
I’ll be going through the process of installing iriverter, the cross-platform open source transcoding software for Windows and Linux. This guide is what I personally used to get video files transcoded successfully for playback on my iRiver X20.
First you’ll need to fetch and install the software then configure a special X20 profile so that iriverter knows how to convert videos to the correct format for playback on the X20 player.
Windows:
Make sure you download the zip version, not the installer version as the installer seems fubar and didn’t install correctly for me.
Version 0.16 is what I use and know to work.
There seems to be some gumby 0.17 version on a related page that requires java webstart or some other foolishness, avoid it, do not download it, stick to the 0.16 zip file.
Unzip the files to a folder such as “C:\Program Files\iriverter-0.16\”
Browse to that folder, find the Profiles folder, then create a new file in the Profiles folder called “x20.profile”
Edit x20.profile and paste this into it:
brand=iriver
device=X20
maxVideoBitrate=512
maxAudioBitrate=320
dimensions=320×240
maxFrameRate=30
wrapperFormat=avi
audioFormat=mp3
Save and you’re done.
or just download this file to that folder: x20.profile
Now try running iriverter.exe and inside iriverter go to Options menu -> Device -> iriver
and you should see an X20 profile, select it and start converting! 
Linux – Ubuntu 8.04:
Install the software:
Go to the System menu -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager.
Click Search and enter iriverter.
When it finds the package, choose “Mark For Installation” on the package.
This should install the iriverter package for you under Applications menu -> Sound & Video -> iriverter.
Now configure the X20 profile:
from a terminal (Applications menu -> Accessories -> Terminal) run:
sudo vim /usr/share/iriverter/profiles/x20.profile
Then paste the following lines in and save:
brand=iriver
device=X20
maxVideoBitrate=512
maxAudioBitrate=320
dimensions=320×240
maxFrameRate=30
wrapperFormat=avi
audioFormat=mp3
Now run iriverter by going to Applications menu -> Sound & Video -> iriverter
Then in iriverter go to Options menu -> Device -> iriver
and you should see an X20 profile, select it and start converting!
